The first conference “Challenges in Sustainable Mining”, organised by the Mining Economics Research Group of the University of Antofagasta, was held November 17 and 18, with the attendance of over 30 leading industry executives, authorities and researchers to discuss the current and future of the sector.
Relevant topics such as lithium and clean energy, water usage, green mining, climate change, protection of salt flats and electromobility, along with regulatory, tax and territorial aspects, among others, all focused on their effects on the Antofagasta Region, were analysed at the meeting.
CRAMSA’s CEO, Peter Hatton, took part in the conference with the presentation on “Green and Sustainable Water and Mining”, which focused on the contribution of desalination as an alternative water source for the development of a greener mining industry.
According to Hatton, CRAMSA’s ‘Aguas Marítimas’ desalination project aims to address the region’s drought and desertification challenges while freeing up the use of inland water resources by the mining industry, which enhances operational sustainability, ensuring a reliable water supply for the industry’s ongoing processes.
In his concluding remarks, the executive extended an invitation to the audience, encouraging them to envision a future with increased water availability in the Antofagasta Region. He emphasized the importance of exploring new sources of water resources as a means to foster comprehensive development in the region.
The inaugural edition of the congress was held at the Horacio Meléndez hall of the University´s Angamos campus, with a simultaneous online seminar broadcast. The event aimed to push the boundaries of mining knowledge, particularly from an economic standpoint, and to promote sustainable resource extraction practices.
